The Ford Model T (the "Tin Lizzie) was Stan and Ollie's favourite car to (usually) wreck in their films - solid, unpretentious and subject to disaster! And you could have "any colour you want - as long as it's black!" (famous quote from Mr. Henry Ford himelf)
The cars - like their sem-fornal attire and sometime old-world courtesy behaviour - were slightly out of date. In "One Good Turn", one ultimately collapses, and others come to grief in "Two Tars", "Big Business" (one of my favs!), Hog ,Wild", "Perfect Day" "County Hospital", "Busy Bodies" and much later "Air Raid Wardens".
In "Stolen Jools" they sit in yet another collapsed example - the result of Stan having made the last payment on it!
This instantly collapsable car was one of several mutilated vehicles kept on the Roach lot, many held together merely by wire, for instant collapse.
The car in "Hog Wild" had a flexible drive built beneath it.
"Perfect Day"'s car finally sinks into a giant puddle so that just the cast's hats were left showing (technical info. as to how they did that in script). Much the same happens in "Leave 'Em Laughing". "Going Bye-Bye" sees that car anchored with a large weight and "Saps at Sea" defies mechanical logic when it's engines drives it from the back seat!
The Model T in "Bacon Grabbers" undulates but refuses to start, yet somehow sensing it's about to be kicked - only then starting! It ends up under a steamroller...."Our Wife" replaces the Model T with a tiny 'limousine' into which Ollie, Stan and Babe London have to fit: while the police car driven by Laurel and Hardy in "The Midnight Patrol" refuses to start and then someone strips it of it's tyres - the cop H.O. radio crackles and tells them "Car 13, your're tyres have been stolen. That is all!".
Other people's cars figure prominently - and it seems an unwritten rule that when Ollie falls into the road, SOMEONE has to hit him......In "Chickens Come Home", it's the gossip's car that collapses.
Laurel and Hardy's most impressive entrance is in stately poses in the back of a limousine, which tricks us into thinking that finally they've cracked it......only to get out at an employment agency and thank the chauffeur for the lift!

But I think that most of you guys will like seeing Jean Harlow in her underwear best in "Double Whoopee" - she only has a Yellow Taxi in the background - but hey? Who's looking at the car??

FILLING A MODEL T WITH 'CREAM WHEAT' (to plug up a leaking radiator??) FROM BACON GRABBERS", 1929 (Stan, Ollie and Charlie Hall)
Instead of exchanging insurance details when Charlie crashes into Laurel and Hardy's car by backing into it, thus damaging their radiator - they dumbly take up on his suggestion that Cream Wheat will plug the hole - it does, until it cooks - sending globs of cooked mush over their windscreen, a cop, two innocent passing-by ladies etc.
THE 'BEFORE' SHOT MODEL T IN "HOG WILD 1930"
Stan drives to Ollie's house, nearly causing an accident when distracted by a pretty girl. At Ollie's house he DOES cause an accident, sounding his motor horn - just as Ollie is climbing a ladder.
Ollie warily accepts Stan's help - until his rear is set on fire by Stan's car's exhaust (told you that this picture was a 'before' pic!).
Later, Ollie places a board over Stan's car as support for the ladder.........see 'after' photo and details

After many attempts on the roof , getting electrocuted etc, Ollie climbs the ladder, still perched on the car, but Stan, catching the starter, send them on a nightmare journey through town - which concludes with the ladder resting on an open-topped bus, where Ollie (inside) greets the passengers as best he can!. He falls into the vehicle's path and just scrambles clear as hiw heartbroken wife appears. Ollie assures he is unharmed, but she is crying because their radio has been re-possessed. They retire to Stan's car, which, parked on the streetcar tracks, stalls.........An off screen crash leaves the trio in the photographed crushed Model T!
NIFTY LITTLE ROADSTER IN "TWO "TARS", 1928 - A RENTED MODEL
Note the "For Hire" sign on Stan's door! But this doesn't stop the smug smiles of Stan and Ollie - not the girls surrounding them in this car - All The Nice Girls Love A Sailor!
Running into a traffic jam, they drive past the line of cars, to find a driver out of gas blocking the first queue of crs - and road-works blocking their new path. Obliged to back up, they collide with another car moving forward and an exchange of bumps ruins the rear car's radiator. Ollie forces the other driver (Ed. Kennedy) to back into the car behind HIM, breaking that car's headlight. A fight spreads down the line including a car laden with camping equipment, and a lorry driver. Stan and Ollie are the most active in the fight, pulling the front wheels from one car and bending up the mudguards of another. A motorcycle cop pulls up to survey the highway riot, the sight of which sends the girls away. The cop's whistle silences the motorists - who blame the two sailors for starting the fray. The cop orders them to remain, while letting the other vehicles go, forming such a parade of mutilated vehicles that Stan and Ollie cannot keep sraight faces. Then, a heavy truck crushes the cop's motorcycle and grabbing their chance, Stan and Ollie drive off. "Everybody follow them sailors!" roars the cop - and they do, into a railway tunnel. An oncoming train forces the pursuing cars to retreat - Stan and Ollie emerge from the other end of the tunnel, their rented car squashed sideways........
CAUSING A TRAFFIC JAM - IN "LEAVE 'EM LAUGHING', 1928 - WITH EDGAR KENNEDY AS THE COP
Stan's midnight toothache means trouble for Ollie - he tries a kitchen doorknob to loosen Stan's tooth -which of course fails! The landlord threatens to evict them tomorrow and their bed collapses.
In the morning at the dentists, Stan panics and Ollie tries to coax him into the chair so that the (by now) exhausted dentist can sneak up on him. The dentist's big brawny assistant extracts by mistake Ollie's tooth under anaesthetic - and the laughing gas goes everywhere...........Stan and Ollie try to drive away in their laughing condition and after a minor accident meet the traffic cop. Still immobilised with laughter, they cause a jam and the cop waves them on...With the traffic held up, the cop orders them to move but is asked to crank their car. He loses his belt and his trousers fall to the ground. Eventually, he commandeers their vehicle, driving it straight into a deep puddle (again!) Stan and Ollie continue to laugh - as they all sink
into the mud........
OK! HERE IT IS..............! "DOUBLE WHOOPEE", 1929, WITH JEAN HARLOW IN HER UNDERWEAR.......
Stan and Ollie are doorman and new footman at a rather grand hotel - the letter from the agency declares "the best we could do at short notice".........
A Prussian Prince and his Prime Minister are expected - and Stanand Ollie, arriving via the front entrance - are mistaken for those dignatories - and proceed throughout most of the film to wreak havoc on them , especially the snooty Prince! He goes to take a lift - but Ollie's finger has pressed the button (about to take his duty as the Doorman) just prior - and the Prince disappears down the lift-shaft. He is retrieved and his dignity is almost regained - when Stan (about to start his duty as Footman) presses the lift button - and down the lift shaft goes the Prince again!
Outside, a fight is started by an irate cabbie (Charlie Hall) with both Ollie and Stan - the cab driver's hat's ripped, Ollie's hankerchief is torn in half by the cabbie and plucks a button from Ollie's brand new uniform.
Another Yellow Taxi brings the beautiful Jean Harlow to the hotel's entrance - she receives Ollie's personal escort into the lobby. neither she nor Ollie is aware that, Stan, having shut the cab door, has left the back half of her dress in the cab door -leaving her advancing rear spectacularly revealed. Stan tries to signal but has to rush to the desk - Ollie, horrified, removes Stan's coat, in which the embarrassed girl hurries off with the entire lobby looking on, as Stan is left in his long-johns.........more fighting between Ollie and Stan with everyone in the lobby getting involved. The poor old prince enters the lobby - just in time to get a flying cake all over his dinner jacket. Outraged, he vows to report all incidents to the King and Queen - and plummets once more into the lift shaft, just before Stan and Ollie descend, exiting with great dignity.

The script contains background scenes explaining all the characters and the how's and why's of Stan's films and later Laurel and Hardy film's at Roach. Apparently, on the first take, Jean's underwear was SO flimsy as to look non-existent. Even the hardened cameramen and crew, though tittilated (pardon the pun) I'm sure, were shocked! Ah! It would never have got past the censors anyway.........
ANOTHER GLAMOROUS (CLOTHED) BLONDE IN FRONT OF A CAR, VIRGINIA RUTH LAUREL, MRS LAUREL NO. 2 AND 3, WITH HER NEW FORD V-8, SPORT COUPE, 1934
I guess that - perhaps - this should have been on PHOTO. PAGE NO. 6 - which shows you come of the other cars (but also a Ford Model A) available in the script to the characters in real life - and some technical details of the cars, for those that dribble over those sorts of things..........But a lot of autmomobile history is also included - so it's well worth a look...........
